Honor Frost (born October 28, 1917 in Nicosia , † September 12, 2010 in London ) was a British professional diver , archaeologist and pioneer of underwater archeology .

Life

Honor Frost was born in Cyprus and grew up after the early death of both parents with the lawyer Wilfred Evill in London. She studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London and the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford .

In the late 1940s she began her professional diver training in Cannes . Under the direction of Frédéric Dumas , she took part in a diving expedition to a shipwreck near the coast of southern France.

In 1957, Honor Frost worked on the excavation of graves near Jericho , led by Kathleen Kenyon , and came to the conclusion that the careful methodology of archaeological excavations on land must be transferred to research underwater. She moved to Lebanon and explored the ancient ports of Tire and Sidon there .

In 1959, Frost met the photographer Peter Throckmorton , with whom she discovered the underwater wreck off Cape Gelidonya in southwestern Turkey and recognized its importance. The site was then scientifically explored and documented by George Fletcher Bass in 1960 .

In 1968 she led a UNESCO sponsored expedition in the port of Alexandria , and in 1971, on behalf of the British School at Rome, she led the exploration of a Punic shipwreck off the Sicilian city of Marsala . Frost was considered an expert in ancient shipbuilding and the classification of stone anchors.

Honor Frost had artistic talent. Right from the start she incorporated illustrations in her archaeological work, for example for sketching ship components, with a particular preference for ship anchors . She later inherited Wilfrid Evill's art collection, which achieved record prices at auctions after Frost's death, and was in contact with the fashion designer Thea Porter and the gallery owner Erica Brausen .

Honors

In 1997 the French government honored her for her pioneering work in underwater archeology in Egypt. In 2005 she received the Colin McLeod Award from the British Sub-Aqua Club for promoting international cooperation in diving.
