Jaroslav Labský

Jaroslav Labský (born November 27, 1875 in Praskačka , † October 28, 1949 in Prague ) was a Czech composer and military bandmaster .

Life

Jaroslav Labský was born in Praskačka (near Königgrätz ) in the Kingdom of Bohemia ; his father was an organist and teacher. After attending compulsory school, he studied at the Prague Conservatory . From 1891 to 1896 Labský worked as an orchestral musician in Istanbul and Izmir . In 1896 he joined the regimental music of the kuk infantry regiment No. 18 in Theresienstadt ; he stayed with the regiment until 1906, and in 1900 he was transferred to the kuk Infantry Regiment No. 99 for one year . During this time Labský studied harmony and counterpoint with Josef Nešvera in Olomouc , where he was temporarily stationed. From 1906 to 1908 he was transferred to the Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment No. 84 in Vienna , after which he became Kapellmeister of the regimental music of the Imperial and Royal Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 1 . During this time he also studied at the local music college . From 1914 or 1916 to 1918 he served as a military bandmaster with the kuk infantry regiment No. 37 in Großwardein . After the end of the Habsburg Monarchy, Labský was taken over by the Czech army and served as the bandmaster of the garrison music of Kutná Hora , from which the regimental music of Infantry Regiment No. 21 in Čáslav in 1920 emerged . In 1923 he had to quit his job and from 1925 to 1927 he conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra and the orchestra of the shooting club in Kutná Hora. From 1929 to 1940 Labský was the conductor of the Prague National Guard Orchestra.

Labský was awarded the medal of the Order of Leopold II .

Labský wrote about 500 compositions, some of which are still played today. The best-known works include the marches Olympiad , Brave Ahead and Prager Leben (also known as Moldau Salut ).
