Howard Sandroff
Howard Sandroff (born October 28, 1949 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American composer and music teacher .
Sandroff studied at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . His composition teachers were Robert Lombardo and Ben Johnston . He received composition and research grants a. a. the National Endowment for the Arts , the University of Chicago, and the Yamaha Music Foundation . He has worked as conductor and director of Chicago's New Art Ensemble and is a lecturer in music at the University of Chicago and directs their studio for computer music. He is also Professor of Sound Art at Columbia College Chicago .
Sandroff's compositions include works for solo instruments, chamber music ensembles and orchestras, often combined with live or recorded electronic music. They have been performed worldwide at concerts and festivals such as New Music America , the Aspen Music Festival , New Music Chicago , the International Computer Music Conference , and the World Saxophone Congress . In 2009 he was invited by Pierre Boulez to take part in the opening of the new IRCAM at the Center Georges Pompidou , where Alain Damiens performed his composition Tephillah for clarinet and computer with the Ensemble Intercontemporain .
As a live musician, Sandroff has performed electronic and computer music by composers such as Alvin Lucier , Edwin London , Robert Lombardo , Steve Reich , Barney Childs , Matthew Malsky , Easly Blackwood , Morton Subotnik and Pierre Boulez . With the clarinetist John Bruce Yeh he forms the duo Double Dialogue .
