John Bruce Yeh

John Bruce Yeh (* 1951 in Washington, DC ) is an American clarinetist and music teacher.

Yeh began studying medicine at UCLA , but during this time he was the first clarinetist in the American Youth Symphony and won the Frank Sinatra Musical Performance Award . From 1975 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music and attended music schools in Aspen, Marlboro and Tanglewood. He names Gary Gray , Michele Zukovsky , Harold Wright , Ray Still , Marcel Moyse , Allan Dennis and Mehli Mehta as his most important mentors . In 1977 Georg Solti brought him to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as principal bass clarinet , where he has been principal clarinet since 1979 and principal clarinet from 2008 to 2011. He also works as a guest with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra .

In 1979, Yeh founded the Chicago Pro Musica group , which won a Grammy in 1986 . In 1982 he was a prizewinner at the International Music Competition in Munich, 1985 winner of the Naumburg Clarinet Competition in New York. With the Chicago Symphony Orchestra he played Carl Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto in 1993 under Neeme Järvi and the American premiere of Elliott Carter's Clarinet Concerto in 1998 under Pierre Boulez 's direction . With his wife, the clarinetist Teresa Reilly , the erhu player Wang Guowei and the pipa player Yang Wei , he founded the quartet Birds and Phoenix , which is dedicated to the connection of Eastern and Western musical traditions. It debuted in 2006 with a performance of compositions by Victoria Bond , Pamela Chen , Lu Pei and Bright Sheng . With his wife and the actors T. Daniel and Laurie Willets , he also founded the visual-musical quartet InVenTionS .

After teaching at DePaul University for more than a quarter of a century , Yeh moved to the College for the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in Chicago in 2004 . He has also given master classes at the Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music , Manhattan School of Music , Cleveland Institute of Music , Northwestern University, and the University of Michigan .
