Lu Pei

Lu Pei (* 1956 ) is a Chinese-American composer and music teacher.

Lu Pei collected music from ethnic minorities in Guangxi Province while he was a student , the influence of which can be felt in his early compositions. He became known in China through his collaboration with Yang Liqing on the dance drama Monument without Words (无 字 碑). From 1991 he continued his musical education in the USA. He received his master's degree from the University of Louisville in 1995 and his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 2002 . From 2003 to 2006 he taught at the University of Louisville, and in 2006 he was appointed professor at Nanjing University of Education . He has also been teaching at the Shanghai Music Academy since 2006 .

His extensive compositional work encompasses almost all musical genres; He composed six symphonies, three orchestral overtures, five suites, two ballets, an opera and three instrumental concerts as well as chamber and vocal music and film scores. His compositions have been performed by various well-known orchestras and music ensembles in China, the USA, South Africa, Japan and many European countries and have received awards at festivals and competitions in China and the USA.
