Yang Wei (musician)

Yang Wei (chin .: 楊 惟, * 1960 ) is a Chinese pipa player.

Yang received training in various traditional Chinese musical instruments from the age of six. When he was thirteen, he decided to do the pipa and became a student of Liu Dehai . In 1988 he performed as a soloist with the Shanghai Orchestra , and the following year he received the ART Trophy First Prize in the international competition for Chinese musical instruments in the pipa player category.

In 1996 he moved to the USA. Here he stepped u. a. at the Ravinia International Music Festival , Kimmel Center , Lincoln Center, and Chicago Symphony Center . He performed the world premieres of commissioned compositions by Bright Sheng , Huang Ruos and Lu Pei and was artist in residence at Chicago's Art Institute , where he lectured on music. Since 2000 he has been a member of Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Ensemble , with whom he recorded the albums When Strangers Meet and New Impossibilities . In cooperation with Betti Xiang and the Amelia Piano Trio , the album Song of Consonance: Master of Chinese Music, Vol. 1 was created in 1998 . Under his own name, he released the album Ambush from All Sides (2002).
