The change to science took place after an apprenticeship at the Timirjasew Academy in Moscow (from 1971 to 1973) by taking up work (from 1974) at the Institute for Potato Research Groß Lüsewitz of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences (AdL). Here were also made Habilitation (1981) and appointed professor of AdL (1982). Until the dissolution of the institute after reunification, he worked as director of the production research department in Groß Lüsewitz. Until he retired, he worked at the newly founded State Research Center for Agriculture and Fisheries of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Gülzow as head of the arable farming department and deputy head of the Institute for Crop Production. After his retirement , Schuhmann was involved in association work for the German potato industry and as a consultant for crop production in Russian-speaking countries.

He has supervised numerous doctoral students, prepared reports on 18 dissertations and 9 post-doctoral theses as well as 16 reports on research reports from other scientific institutions and 5 reports for insurance companies and courts. The results of his own research are written down in 35 research reports. At home and abroad, Schuhmann has well over 300 publications in the specialist press.
