Live and act

While studying political science , German studies , theater studies and journalism (1961–1965 in Freiburg and Berlin ), he began working as a freelance journalist. He learned the journalistic trade while working for the student magazines at both universities. The work as editor of Alternative offered an essential political orientation . Journal for Literature and Discussion of the Independent Left (1964–1982).

In 1966 he began working at the Berlin International Film Festival , where he was responsible for the retrospective from 1966 to 1970 and opened the festival with two film series for the New Latin American Cinema. From 1971 to 2006 he was a member of the management team of the International Forum of Young Films at the Berlinale, responsible for Latin America . From 1971 to 1985 he was also responsible for the Latin America selection of the West German Short Film Festival Oberhausen (today: International Short Film Festival Oberhausen ).

In 1968 he shot his first television program in Brazil with the series New Brazilian Film . In 1987 he became the first German TV journalist to interview the writer Gabriel García Márquez in detail.

In 1971, Film and Revolution in Latin America was the first of his numerous publications on Latin American film, and in 1987, Historia del cine latinoamericano, one of the first film stories in Latin America.

In 1973 he took up a teaching position, primarily at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin (1973–1979), which also brought him to the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig and the University of Bremen.

From 1978 to 1989 he represented the German Union of Journalists (today ver.di ) on the administrative board of the Filmförderungsanstalt. In 1989 he was one of the founders of the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires . Since 2002 he has been a board member of the Friends of the Ibero-American Institute eV in Berlin , and since 2012 ambassador for Erfurt .

In his radio features, which he mostly directs himself, he has been committed to Latin American topics from the start and has presented the political and cultural situation of the continent in numerous contributions. In the political programs he was particularly interested in the transformation processes: the smashing of the democracies in Brazil , Chile , Uruguay and Argentina , the political and cultural resistance to the military dictatorships and the difficult processes of speech democratization. He has often described the consequences of neoliberalism on social and cultural development as well as the failure of socialist projects in Cuba and Venezuela . In recent years he has paid particular attention to the strengthening of social movements in Latin America.
