Betti Xiang

Betti Xiang (chin .: 項 蓓 星, * 1960 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese erhu player.

Xiang had first lessons from her father, the erhu master Xiang Zuying . She first appeared in 1978 and made her debut in 1981 with the Shanghai National Orchestra , with whom she premiered works by Chinese composers such as Jin Fuzai , Lu Pei and Zhu Jianer while touring France, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan . In 1988 she received the Young Artist Award as an enthusiastic player in Beijing and Shanghai . In addition to her work as a musician, she taught at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing.

After a farewell concert in 1995 at the Lan Xing Theater in Beijing, Xiang moved to the USA in 1996. Here she stepped u. a. with the Amelia Piano Trio , the Cube Contemporary Chamber Ensemble , the Lincoln String Quartet , the Newberry Consort Early Music Ensemble and since 2006 with Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Ensemble .

In 2005 she played Tan Dun's concert Crouching Tiger for the inauguration of Millennium Park in Chicago . In 2006 she played the concert The Butterfly Lovers with the Silk Road Ensemble and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Alan Miller . In 2007, Xiang gave a gala concert with the New York Albany Symphony Orchestra . The following year she played The Butterfly Lovers Concerto with the Florida Symphony Orchestra in Tampa Bay .

Over the years, musicians such as Bruce Saylor , Conrad Tao , Huang Ruo , Victoria Bond , Patricia Morehead , Bright Sheng , Tan Dun and Chen Yi have composed works for her. Luís Tinoco composed the piece Erhu and Orchestra for her and the Albany Symphony Orchestra . In 2006 her solo album Tunes of Countryside was released in Shanghai, China . She recorded the album Songs Of Consonance: Masters Of Chinese Music Vol. 1 with Pipa player Yang Wei .
