Liu Dehai

Liu Dehai (刘德海* 13. August 1937 in Shanghai ; † 11. April 2020 in Beijing ) was a Chinese pipa player, composer and music educator .

Career

Liu learned to play various instruments of classical Chinese folk music such as pipa , erhu and sanxian in his childhood . From 1954 he was a student of the pipa player Lin Sicheng . From 1957 to 1961 he continued his education at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing with Lin, as well as with Cao Anhe , Sun Yude and Yang Dajun . At Wu Junglue he learned to play guqin and banhu , and he also got to know western music. After graduation, he stayed as a teacher at the conservatory. From 1984 he taught at the Chinese Conservatory, where he received a professorship in 1987 and became vice-president.

In 1970 Liu Pipasolist of the Chinese Central Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to arrangements of classical Chinese songs and pipa compositions, he also composed his own works for the pipa ( Chapter of Life , Chapter of Pastorale , Chapter of Religion ). His arrangement of Surrounded on All Sides became internationally known . With the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berliner Symphoniker he played the pipa concerto Little Sisters of the Grassland under Seiji Ozawa from 1980–81 .
