Robert Linn

Robert Linn (born October 11, 1925 in San Francisco , † October 28, 1999 in San Francisco ) was an American composer and music teacher .

Linn studied at Mills College with Darius Milhaud , at Princeton University with Roger Sessions and at the University of Southern California (USC) with Halsey Stevens and Ingolf Dahl . He completed his studies with a bachelor's and master's degree (1957 and 1958, respectively). From 1957 he taught at USC, from 1973 to 1990 he headed the Department of Music Theory and Composition. His students include Morten Lauridsen , Billy Childs , Donald Crockett and David Froom .

Linn's compositional work includes orchestral works - including a one-movement symphony and several instrumental concerts, several song cycles, piano works and chamber music. His Second Piano Concerto, which he wrote for pianist John Perry , was a semi-finalist in the Friedheim Awards Competition at the Kennedy Center and a finalist in the National Orchestra Association New Music Project . Propagula for harmony orchestras (1970) belongs to the standard repertoire of the major harmony orchestras in the USA. His compositions have appeared on labels like Orion , Crystal , TrueMedia and Golden Crest .
