Halsey Stevens

Halsey Stevens (born December 3, 1908 in Scott , Cortland County , New York , † January 20, 1989 in Inglewood , California ) was an American composer , music teacher and musicologist .

Life

Stevens studied at Syracuse University until 1937 with William Berwald , and in 1944 at the University of California at Berkeley with Ernest Bloch . As a teacher he worked at Syracuse University (1935 to 1937), Dakota Wesleyan University (1937 to 1941), the College of Music of the Bradley Polytechnic Institute (1941 to 1946, partly interrupted by military service), the University of Redlands (1946) and from 1946 at the University of Southern California until his retirement in 1976. There were also visiting professorships a. a. at Yale University (1960/61).

In addition to various composition prizes, Stevens' awards include two Guggenheim Fellowships (1964 and 1971).

Stevens' compositions remained committed to tonality and include orchestral works (including three symphonies and solo concerts), numerous chamber music works and vocal compositions. As a writer, he wrote a biography of Béla Bartók ( The Life and Music of Béla Bartók , first edition 1953), which is still one of the standard English-language works on this composer.
