Morten Lauridsen
Morten Johannes Lauridsen (born February 27, 1943 in Colfax , Washington ) is an American composer .
Life
Lauridsen grew up as a son of Danish immigrants in Portland ( Oregon on). After initially working as a firefighter with the United States Forest Service , he decided to study composition at the University of Southern California with Ingolf Dahl , Robert Linn , Harold Owen and Halsey Stevens .
Since 1967 he has been teaching composition at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California . From 1994 to 2001 he was composer in residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale . Lauridsen is one of the most popular choral composers in the United States. He gained increasing fame with his 1994 composition O Magnum Mysterium because of its mystical and mysterious character.
Lauridsen's work, which consists almost exclusively of vocal music , has received many awards. In 2007 Lauridsen was awarded the National Medal of Arts at the White House , the highest honor given to artists by the American government. Like Eric Whitacres, Lauridsen's compositional style can be described as “neo- impressionistic ”.
Lauridsen lives on Waldron Island, a lonely island in the US state of Washington.
