Donald Crockett

Donald Crockett (* 1951 in Pasadena , California ) is an American composer , conductor and music teacher .

Crockett took composition lessons with Robert Linn , Halsey Stevens and Edward Applebaum and studied with Peter Racine Fricker and Humphrey Searle at the University of Southern California (until 1976) and at the University of California, Santa Barbara (until 1981). From 1981 he taught at the Thornton School of Music at the University of South California, where he is professor and director of the composition program and director of the Thornton Edge New Music Ensemble . As the head of the ensemble, he premiered well over a hundred works by students at the music school.

He has worked as a conductor of the new music ensemble Xtet and as a guest conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra , the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble , the Cleveland Chamber Symphony , the Hilliard Ensemble , the California EAR Unit and the USC Thornton Symphony . Many of his compositions were created on the basis of composition commissions and were written by musicians such as the violinist Ida Kavafian , the singer Janice Felty , the oboist Allan Vogel and the conductors Jorge Mester , JoAnn Falletta , Hugh Wolff , Sergiu Comissiona , Jeffrey Kahane and Christof Perick . Among other things, he was awarded a Guggenheim Scholarship in 2006 and the Arts and Letters Award for Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2013 .
