Luis Jerónimo Fernández de Cabrera y Bobadilla , 4th conde de Chinchon (born October 20, 1586 in Madrid , Spain , † October 28, 1647 ibid) was a Spanish colonial administrator who served as Viceroy of Peru .

Life

Cabrera came from a high nobility family at the court of the Spanish kings. He was a member of the Order of Santiago and chamberlain at the court of King Philip III. from Spain.

In 1621 he married Ana de Osorio, after whose death he married Francisca Henríquez de Ribera.

He was appointed viceroy of Peru and embarked for South America from Cádiz in August 1628 . He arrived in Lima on January 14, 1629 to take over his office.

He sent several research missions to the Amazon, in 1638 under the direction of Pedro Teixeira , who with the Jesuit Fathers Artieda and Acuña first traversed the unexplored land beyond the Cordilleras.

He supported the colony in Chile , which was at war with the insurgent Mapuche , with extensive reinforcement troops.

Manuel de Mendiburu describes Cabrera as a strictly moral and religious man, under whose rule the courts of the Inquisition took their toll. At the same time, however, Cabrera worried about the fate of the natives and urged the king to abolish the obligation to perform forced labor.

On December 18, 1639, Cabrera handed over the office to his successor. He set out on the return trip to Europe; His second wife, Francisca Henríquez de Ribera, died on the trip in Cartagena . He himself reached Europe, where he became a member of the State Council and accompanied King Philip IV on campaigns.
