Diego Fernández de Córdoba y López de las Roelas Benavides y Melgarejo, Marqués de Guadalcazár (* 1578 in Seville , Spain , † October 6, 1630 in Guadalcázar, Andalusia , Spain) was a Spanish colonial administrator who served as Viceroy of New Spain and Peru .

Life

Origin and youth

Fernández de Córdoba came from the noble family Fernández de Córdoba . He was a member of the Order of Santiago and chamberlain at the court of King Philip III. from Spain.

At the age of only twenty he traveled to Central Europe as the king's ambassador to escort the king's bride, Margaret of Austria , to Spain. The king then made him Marquis of Gualdacázar in 1609 . He married the German Marianne von Riederer and couple.

Tenure as viceroy in Mexico

Philip III appointed him viceroy of New Spain in what is now Mexico , where he was in office from 1612 to 1621. During this time his wife died.

At the beginning of his reign he put down a revolt of native Indians and founded several cities, including Cordoba . He improved the water supply of Mexico City by having an aqueduct built in 1620 that conducted water from Chapultepec to the center.

Term of office as Viceroy of Peru

Shortly before his death, the king transferred him to South America as Viceroy of Peru. He held this office from 1622 to 1628. During his tenure, he renewed the revenue system and ended the family struggles in the mining town of Potosí.

He had the fortifications of Lima reinforced to protect the viceroyalty from attacks by Dutch and French privateers in the Pacific.

After the end of his tenure, he returned to Europe with his daughters in 1629, where he died the following year.
