life and work

In 1945 Raymond briefly studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes , then moved to Paris, where he worked as a photographer. In 1949 he made his first décollage (tear-off posters / newspaper tear-offs), and in 1955 he met François Dufrêne and Yves Klein .

In 1960 Raymond Hains founded the Nouveaux Réalistes with his close friend Arman as well as with César , Daniel Spoerri , Jean Tinguely , Mimmo Rotella , Pierre Restany and Yves Klein , the aim of which was to create a smooth transition between art and life and social realities in theirs To reflect work.

Hains became internationally known for his poster demolitions, the "Affiches lacérées". He developed the principle of exposed layers of posters stuck on top of one another as early as the late 1940s with Jacques de la Villeglé . The Affichistes, which also included François Dufrêne and Mimmo Rotella, wanted to convey content that was critical of society and the media by tearing off, burning and painting over the advertising messages. After 1946, Raymond Hains also devoted himself to abstract photography (Photographies hypnagogiques) and film, which are among the earliest works in this genre. In 1950 he invented the concept of the “ultra-lettre” and dedicated himself to the “lettres éclatées” (broken letters).

His works have been exhibited around the world, for example in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (exhibition "Bewogen Bewegungsing"), in the Center Pompidou in Paris or in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Hains was invited to the Venice Biennale in 1964, to the 4th documenta in 1968 and to Documenta X in Kassel in 1997 . Some of his works are also exhibited in the museum FLUXUS + in Potsdam.

In 1996 he received the Kurt Schwitters Prize for Fine Art from the Lower Saxony Sparkasse Foundation .
