The Diemersteiner Wald is part of the Palatinate Forest in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It has an area of about 50 km².

geography

The Diemersteiner Wald is located in the north of the Palatinate Forest north of the hamlet of Diemerstein , which belongs to the community of Frankenstein ( Verbandsgemeinde Enkenbach-Alsenborn , district of Kaiserslautern ). Motorway 6 ( Saarbrücken - Mannheim ) runs through the northern part for almost 10 km , where it reaches its highest point in this section at 403 m above sea level .

The forest area is roughly limited in the south by the B 37 ( Kaiserslautern - Bad Dürkheim ), in the west by the B 48 ( Rockenhausen - Annweiler ) and in the north by the state road  395, which connects Enkenbach-Alsenborn with Grünstadt . In the east near Carlsberg , the Diemersteiner Forest has no visible border with other parts of the Palatinate Forest. Settlement "corner points" of the Diemersteiner forest are Hochspeyer in the southwest, Enkenbach-Alsenborn in the northwest and Carlsberg in the northeast.

The altitude is usually between 300 and 450 m. The most important elevations include the Kieskautberg (461 m), the Krumme Eck (449 m) and the Hohe Bühl (443 m), from which both the Eisbach (north flank) and the Isenach (south flank) arise.

From the Krummen Eck in the west via the Hohe Bühl in the north and the Kieskautberg in the east, the watershed runs between Eisbach and Eckbach as the northern and Isenach and Speyerbach ( Hochspeyerbach ) as the southern drainage system.

history

Above the hamlet of Diemerstein are the ruins of the castle of the same name , which was first mentioned in 1216. In 1521, during the Reformation , the humanist Ulrich von Hutten was accommodated there. Today's Diemersteiner Forest is largely identical to the forest owned by the former lords of the castle and therefore bears his name.
