life and work

Born into a family of landless farmers, he moved to Amposta with his parents at the age of eight . As a twelve year old he worked in an office. In 1927 he moved to Barcelona, where he began his writing career; first as a journalist for the newspapers La Vanguardia and ABC . In 1931 he published his first novel L'inútil combat (The vain fight).

In 1932, Terres de l'Ebre , his most famous work, is published. The novel describes the situation of farmers in the Ebro Delta; They live there, forgotten and modest, cultivating ungrateful, hard ground reserved for the dead.

In 1933 he published Notes d'un estudiant que va morir boig and in 1935 Camins de nit .

During the Spanish Civil War and the first years after the war, it became quiet around him until his novel Tino Costa was finally published in Catalan and Spanish in 1947 . In 1946 he already published a biography of Cervantes in Catalan.

From 1948 he wrote mainly in Spanish. His work Sobre las piedras grises , with which he won the Premio Nadal , the oldest literary prize awarded in Spain, is one of them, as is Martín Caretas ( 1959 ). In his later years he returned to publications in Catalan: Narracions d'el Delta ( 1965 ), L'espera ( 1948 ), La masia ( 1975 ).

He died of a heart attack on January 2, 1984.
