Caspar Steinlin (also Kaspar Steinlin ; born September 9, 1740 in St. Gallen ; † October 28, 1814 ibid) was a mayor of St. Gallen ( Switzerland ).

Life

Caspar Steinlin was the son of Bartholome Steinlin (* 1713 in St. Gallen; † March 22, 1774 ibid), weaver and file-carrier (junk dealer), and his wife Anna Maria (* 1712 in St. Gallen; † 1784 ibid), one Daughter of Felix Züblin (1681–1715), born. The names of his siblings are known:

Despite his simple origins, he rose over time from a yarn boiler to a mousseline manufacturer . At first he was employed by Hans Joachim Steinmann and by a businessman named Zübler, who lent him money for his own yarn trade; another merchant named Schlatter had him print embroidery models on mousseline in his factory.

In 1778 he was elected city ​​judge and in 1783 guild master, and from 1794 to 1798 he was, alternating with Daniel Girtanner (1733–1798), who held the office in 1795, and Paul Züblin (1736-1809), who held the office in 1796, mayor in St. Gallen; with him the office of mayor expired with the establishment of the Helvetic Republic .

In 1798 he was elected President of the Municipal Council and held this office until 1803; He was then head of the municipal council from 1803 to 1814 and a member of the provisional cantonal government in 1803 and cantonal councilor in St. Gallen from 1803 to 1814 . During this time he also took part in meetings as envoy .

Caspar Steinlin married Anna Magdalena, daughter of Heinrich Stäheli, Gürtler and sub-mayor, in 1770 and Anna Katharina, daughter of Michael Tobler, tanner and councilor, in 1797.
