Politics and world events
Roman Empire
- Emperor Constantius I , who had only sat on the Roman throne since the previous year , dies during a campaign against the Picts and Scots in Eboracum (today: York ). His successor is the previous Caesar Flavius Valerius Severus .
- July 25th : The soldiers in Britannia appoint Constantius' son Flavius Valerius Constantinus ("Constantine the Great") as anti-emperor . Emperor Galerius grants him the now vacant title of Caesar .
- Troubles broke out in Rome when rumors emerged that the Praetorians would be withdrawn from the city and that the Romans' previous tax exemption would be lifted. In the past, the city had lost much of its importance as the center of the empire.
- October 28th : The Praetorians stationed in Rome appoint the son of the former emperor Maximianus Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius as anti-emperor. Maxentius initially named himself princeps invictus ("undefeated ruler").

- November: Sixteen empires : Li Xiong, self-proclaimed King of Chengdu , proclaims himself Emperor of Cheng Han .
