Follis of Severus
  • Spring: The Roman Emperor Severus moves with his army against the usurper Maxentius , the son of the former Emperor Maximian, who lives in Rome . He returns to the Senate from retirement and asserts his influence on his son with the legions. When Severus reached Rome, most of his soldiers defected to Maxentius. Severus withdraws to Ravenna .
  • Emperor Severus is defeated by the superior troops of Maxentius in Ravenna and surrenders.
  • Summer: Emperor Galerius moves with another army to Rome, where the opposing emperor Maxentius is holed up. Again a large part of the soldiers defected to the usurper; Galerius has to withdraw.
  • September 16 : Emperor Severus dies in Tres Tabernae . The details of his death are not clear. Caesar Constantinus ("Constantine the Great"), who would be Severus' successor, initially retained the title of Caesar. The emperor's office remains vacant.
  • Constantine , sub-emperor over Gaul and Britain, marries Fausta , the daughter of the abdicated emperor Maximian . It is not known whether his first wife Minervina is already dead at this point in time or whether he will disregard her.

  • May: Marcellus I becomes Bishop of Rome. Due to the persecution of Christians under Diocletian , there was no bishop for four years. However, the usurper Maxentius, who currently rules Rome, tolerates the new bishop.
