Report from New York on November 22, 1963

Heiner Gautschy (born November 20, 1917 in Basel ; † October 28, 2009 in Zurich ) was a Swiss radio and television journalist .

Life

Gautschy grew up as the son of a textile manufacturer in Basel. He was already active as a journalist while studying history at the University of Basel . During the Second World War he served alongside his studies in the press office of the army headquarters in Interlaken . He completed his studies with a doctorate . After the end of the war he became known for the first time with photo reports from Germany, Czechoslovakia, Turkey and Egypt.

From 1949 to 1967 he worked as a correspondent for Swiss radio in New York , in particular for the program Echo der Zeit . His regular lecture tours in Switzerland made him a prominent commentator on contemporary history. His reports from New York shaped the Swiss public's image of America. This was followed by several months of reporting in China, Cuba and the Soviet Union .

In 1952, Gautschy directed the Basel Muba television experiment , the first broadcasts on the emerging Swiss television . In 1967 Gautschy was finally called to Swiss television, where he (with Annemarie Schwyter , Hans O. Staub and Erich Gysling ) introduced and made known the new weekly magazine Rundschau and the talk shows Link and Unter uns Said . His television career ended in 1984 after he lost his composure while visiting Peter Uebersax , Blick's editor-in-chief at the time, during the live broadcast of Unter Unsaid .

Gautschy died in Zurich at the age of 91. His address at the beginning of a radio report became legendary: "Hello Beromünster , this is Heiner Gautschy speaking in New York" .
