Kevin Luhman

Kevin Luhman is an American astronomer . His specialty is the search for exoplanets and areas in the universe that are suitable for extraterrestrial life .

Life

Luhman studied physics and astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin , where he received his bachelor's degree in May 1993 and became a staff member. His Ph.D. succeeded in August 1998 at the University of Arizona . He then worked at the Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics from 1998 to 2002 and at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory from 2002 to 2005 . Since 2005 he has worked as a professor at Pennsylvania State University . Luhman identified the low-mass brown dwarf OTS 44 (approx. 15 Jupiter masses). In March 2013 the international media announced that Luhman had identified WISE 1049–5319 ( Luhman 16 ), a double system of brown dwarfs near the Sun.
