- Nairobi / Kenya : An attack on the Westgate Mall , which the Somali militia al-Shabaab claimed , killed around 40 people and injured numerous others.
- Nieuwegein / Netherlands : One of the masterminds behind the Mafia murders in Duisburg , the 'Ndrangheta boss Francesco Nirta , is arrested in an apartment in the province of Utrecht after a six-year escape .
- Pyongyang / North Korea : North Korea postpones a planned family reunion with the south . For inter-Korean relations, this means a setback following recent signs of rapprochement, such as the Kaesŏng Special Economic Zone recently reopened.

- Berlin / Germany : In the election for the 18th German Bundestag, the Union parties with Chancellor Angela Merkel as the top candidate, according to preliminary projections, clearly missed the absolute majority with 41.5% of the votes cast and their coalition partner FDP missed the five percent hurdle . The second strongest party is the SPD with 25.7%, followed by the Left with 8.6% and the Greens with 8.4%.
- Bern / Switzerland : The voters decide on three referendums , including the one to revoke compulsory military service .
- Hamburg : The referendum on remunicipalising the energy networks is passed with a narrow majority of 50.9%.
- Ljubljana / Slovenia : In the final of the 38th men's basketball championship , the French national team wins 80:66 against the Lithuanian team .
- Peshawar / Pakistan : At least 78 people die in a double suicide attack on a Christian church.
- Shanwei / China : Typhoon " Usagi " killed at least 25 people in Guangdong province .
- Wiesbaden / Germany : The CDU wins the election for the 19th Hessian state parliament with 38.3% of the votes. The second strongest party is the SPD with 30.7%, followed by the Greens with 11.1%, the Left with 5.2% and the FDP with 5.0%. The previous government coalition consisting of the CDU and FDP thus loses its majority.

- Vienna / Austria : In the National Council election, the SPÖ casts most of the votes with around 26.8% . In addition to the second largest group of the ÖVP and the third largest of the FPÖ , there will also be groups of the Greens , the Stronach team and the Neos in the next National Council .
