Lake Pechora
The Pechora Sea ( Russian Печорское море ) is a marginal sea of the Barents Sea between the islands of Kolgujew in the west, Waigach in the east, the south island of Novaya Zemlya in the north and the coast of Russia on the Yugor Peninsula in the south.
The Pechora Sea is shallow, its average depth is 6 m; the lowest point is 210 m. In the coastal area there is a sea current to the east, the Kolgujew Current . There are several islands off the mainland coast, the largest of which is Dolgi .
The Pechora Sea is frozen over with drift ice and pack ice from November to June . The largest river that flows into it is the eponymous Pechora .
There are considerable oil deposits in the coastal area and under the seabed . The development and promotion in the remote region is controversial, also because of the endangerment of the sensitive Arctic ecosystem through platform construction and operation, as well as the associated trans- Arctic shipping . In 2012 and 2013, the environmental organization Greenpeace protested as part of its “Save the arctic” campaign with its ship Arctic Sunrise at the Priraslomnaja production platform , which was built in the Pechora Sea.
