Chris Argyris

Chris Argyris (born July 16, 1923 in Newark , New Jersey , † November 16, 2013 ) was Professor of Administrative Science at Yale and co-founder of organizational development .

After his military service, he studied psychology and economics. He received his PhD from Cornell University on organizational behavior. From 1951 to 1971 he teaches as a professor of administrative science at Yale University. He later was a professor of education and organizational behavior at Harvard University.

Alongside Dick Beckhard , Edgar Schein and Warren Bennis, Argyris is considered a co-founder of organizational development . He dealt with the question of how an organization influences the development of its employees and to what extent it depends on their quality. He brought the interpersonal relationships in the workplace into the center of attention. This gave rise to the term “ learning organization ”. Argyris is also known for the management concepts of “practiced incompetence” and “defensive routines” (Argyris, in: Fatzer 1996) as well as for helping to develop the construct of the psychological employment contract .
