Dariush Safvat

Dariush (Daryush) Safvat (* 28. November 1928 in Shiraz , † 17th April 2013 in Karaj ) was an Iranian Setar - and Santurspieler and musicologist .

Safvat studied law at the University of Tehran until 1953 and received his doctorate in international law in Paris in 1965 . He was a professor and from 1981 to 1994 dean of the Faculty of Music at the University of Tehran and held various functions at the Iranian Ministry of Science. From 1982 to 1982 he headed the Center for Preserving and Publishing the Iranian Music , from which musicians like Mohammad Reza Lotfi , Hossein Alizadeh , Hossein Omoumi , Parisa , Nasser Farhangfar , Dariush Talai , Majid Kiani and Mahmoud Farahmand emerged , after which until 1986 the Educational Center of Music . Since 1990 he has been a member of the Iranian Academy of Sciences.

As a musician he was first a student of his father Ali Asghar Safvat , then of Abolhasan Saba and Haj Agha Mohammad Irani , two masters of classical Persian music. His students include the santur players Parviz Meshkatian and Majid Kiani and the Setar master Jalal Zolfonoun . Safvat published several books, articles in Persian, French and English, and numerous music recordings. He saw the Persian judge, philosopher, theologian and musician Ostād Elahi as his great role model .
