Restoration inscription by Junius Valerius Bellicius ( CIL 06 40803 )

Iunius Valerius Bellicius was a Roman politician and of the highest senatorial rank ( vir illustris ) . He lived in late antiquity around the turn of the 4th to the 5th century and between the years 421 and 423, under the joint rule of the emperors Flavius Honorius and Theodosius II , he was the city-prefecture of Rome . The name of the praefectus urbi and his term of office are known to research through the fasts of the period from 408 to 421 and the so-called Bellicius inscriptions .

During his tenure, Iunius Valerius Bellicius had the buildings relevant to the city prefecture, which were probably located near the Tellus Temple on the Esquiline, restored. This included the official seat ( secretarium tellurense ) of the city prefect, which included the court ( tribunalia ) as well as the work and archive rooms ( scrinia ). This praefectus urbi was also responsible for the repair work on the Colosseum . After the invasion of the Goths under Alaric in 410, the buildings were in dire need of renovation.

So far, the late antique office of the city prefect and the temple of Tellus in Rome cannot be located archaeologically . Only through the numerous inscriptions found in the vicinity of today's church of San Pietro in Vincoli and in the area of Via della Polveriera, different plausible conclusions can be drawn in modern research about the location of the likely neighboring building complexes. In addition, it is also considered likely that the podium of the Tellus Temple could be included by the city prefects in conducting public court hearings.
