Mohammad-Reza Lotfi ( Persian محمدرضا لطفى Mohammad Rezā Lotfī ; * 1947 in Gorgan , Iran ; † May 2, 2014 in Tehran ) was an Iranian musician and one of the most famous Târ and Setar players in classical Persian music .

Life

Inspired by his eldest brother, Lotfi first learned to play Târ. In 1964 he won first prize at the “Festival of Young Musicians”. The following year he entered the Conservatory of Persian Music ( Honarestan-e Musighi-e Melli ), which he attended for five years. His teachers there included the well-known masters Ali Akbar Schahnazi and Habibullah Salehi .

With Abdollāh Davāmī and Nūr-ʿAlī Borūmand he learned the repertoire ( Radif ) of classical Persian music. At the same time he began to learn the game of setar from Saʿīd Hormozī .

In 1973 he began studying at the Faculty of Music at the University of Tehran and during this time worked with radio and television. Various concert tours have taken him to Italy , France and Germany . In 1986 he moved to the USA .

Mohammad Rezā Lotfī worked in the course of his career with a number of famous Iranian artist colleagues, among others with Mohammad Rezā Šaǧariān , Šahram Nāzerī , Hossein Alizāde and Parvīz Meškātiān . His appearances with the Iranian poet Hūšang Ebtehāǧ were remarkable .

Most recently, Mohammad Rezā Lotfī lived again in Tehran, where he taught music.
