Parviz Meshkatian

Parviz Meshkatian (born May 13, 1955 in Nishapur , † September 21, 2009 in Tehran ) was an Iranian composer and santoor player.

Meshkatian received his first musical training from his father. He then studied music at the Art Academy in Tehran, where he was introduced to the art of the radifs by Noor Ali Boroomand , Dariush Safvat , Mohammad Taghi Massoudieh and Mehdi Barkeshli . He specialized in the radifs of Mirza Abdollah for Santur and Setar and continued his training after completing his studies with Abdollah Davami , Said Hormozi and Yusef Forutan .

He then taught santur and won first prize in the santur game at the Barbad Festival . In 1977 he founded the Aref Ensemble , from which several well-known singers and instrumentalists emerged. On concert tours with this ensemble through Europe and America, he made Persian music internationally known. He was also a co-founder of the Chavosh Foundation for Art and Culture, which is also dedicated to the preservation of traditional Iranian music.

In 1982 Meshkatian published a twenty piece book for Santoor. In 1992 he and the Aref Ensemble received first prize at the Spirit of the Earth Festival in England. In total, he gave hundreds of concerts worldwide, published 18 books and numerous articles, and made around two hundred recordings. Significant recordings of Persian music were made in collaboration with Mohammad-Resa Shajarian . With his compositions of classical Persian poetry, he renewed the classical Persian song composition.
