Mehdi Barkeshli

Mehdi Barkeshli (* 1912 ; † 1988 ) was an Iranian musicologist and physicist.

Barkeshli studied physics with Mahmoud Hesabi at Teachers College and then taught at universities in Tehran. He also studied music theory with Alinaghi Vaziri and Rouhollah Khaleghi and traditional music with Abolhassan Saba . In 1946 he went to Paris and received his doctorate in physics from the Sorbonne .

After his return to Iran, Barkeshli taught at the University of Tehran and founded a theater project there. He started a graduate program in musicology at the Kunsthochschule and founded the Institute for Musicological Research in collaboration with the Royal Cultural Foundation. He later became Chairman of the Iranian Physical Society and Deputy Minister for Culture and Higher Education. He has published scientific articles in Persian, French and English, as well as books on acoustics, physics and Iranian music history.
