Federal cloud

The federal cloud is the private cloud of the German federal administration . It is operated by the federal IT service provider, the Federal Information Technology Center ( ITZBund ).

history

The creation of a cloud for the federal administration was announced in 2011 by the Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich .

On May 20, 2015, the federal cabinet decided to set up the federal cloud as part of the “Federal IT Consolidation”. At the beginning of 2016, the ITZBund was commissioned to set up the federal cloud. On June 30, 2017, the first federal cloud services were made available for the authorities of the federal administration. On April 17, 2018 it was announced that the German company Nextcloud had won the tender for the BundescloudBox. The announcement of the use of an open source solution by the federal administration generated a lot of media coverage.
