Jürgen Berke

Jürgen Berke (born April 13, 1958 in Bochum ) is a German journalist . He is an editor in the “Companies & Markets” section of Wirtschaftswoche magazine .

Life

Berke graduated from high school at Wolfskuhle in Essen-Steele . From 1979 he attended the Cologne School of Journalism. In 1987 he graduated from the University of Cologne with a degree in economics with a social science degree. From 1985 he worked as a freelancer for Westdeutscher Rundfunk as well as for the magazines impulse and Wirtschaftswoche. From 1989 onwards, he was the technology editor in the “Special” section of the weekly magazine Wirtschaftswoche, published by the Handelsblatt publishing group. In 1995 he moved to the “Companies & Markets” department and reported primarily on companies in the telecommunications, IT and cybersecurity markets.

Berke and Wirtschaftswoche colleague Thomas Kuhn became the target of spying as part of the Deutsche Telekom surveillance affair. The business and private telephone connections were analyzed in breach of telecommunications secrecy in order to be able to uncover the sources of the journalists. Berke was also at the top of an internal list of Deutsche Telekom with ten so-called "top explosive journalists". They classified the group as particularly dangerous because they published confidential internal information.

Awards

For the report "Operation Goldesel: We have your account number" about illegal data trade, he (together with his colleagues Michael Kroker and Hans-Jürgen Klesse) received the Isabel and Friedrich Vogel Prize for Business Journalism in 2009. His investigative cover story “In the eye of the storm” about the defensive battle at Thyssenkrupp against an Asian group of hackers awarded the Chambers of Commerce and Industry the 2017 Journalism Prize of the German Economy (Ernst Schneider Prize).

Hobbies

Since the early 1980s, Berke has been committed to spreading French petanque in Cologne. In 1992 he reached third place at the German championship in Tete-a-Tete in Ahlen.
