The Isola dei Conigli is an island of the Pelagie Islands a few meters off the southwest coast of Lampedusa between Sicily and the coast of Tunisia .
The Isola dei Conigli measures 4.4 hectares and in some years (most recently 2001) is connected to Lampedusa by a volatile sandy isthmus of 30 meters in length. At all other times the island can be reached on foot with a water depth between 30 cm and 1.50 m.
Surname
On old English maps the island was called "Rabit Island". This could have led to coniglio = rabbit. An explanation from the Arabic, in which “rabit” means something like “connection”, is also possible, with reference to the isthmus to Lampedusa that sometimes exists.
A rabbit colony would be conceivable through the sand bridge, as well as its disappearance through a longer missing connection.
Island shape
The Isola dei Conigli is low and rocky, its highest point is 26 meters. Flora and fauna are similar to those of the North African coast. The hawksbill turtle comes here to lay eggs. The island is also an important resting place for migratory birds, mainly in April and September.
The island is under nature protection, it belongs to the Riserva naturale orientata Isola di Lampedusa .
