The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty ( English World Coalition Against the Death Penalty , WCADP , French Coalition mondiale contre la peine de mort ), based in Montreuil , France , is an international umbrella organization that the abolition of the death penalty 's goal.

Goals and means

The association emphasizes the international aspect of the “fight” against the death penalty. Its goal is their final and worldwide abolition. It defines the intermediate steps as reducing the number of death sentences and executions carried out ; in some countries the initial aim may only be to obtain a suspension of death sentences.

The WCADP operates in countries and institutions lobbying , organizing international campaigns such as the World Day against the death penalty and is a partner organization of the World Congress against the Death Penalty , which takes place every three years. It supports the work of national and regional initiatives against the death penalty while trying to maintain their independence. The WCADP is financially supported by its member organizations and the European Union .

history

On June 22, 2001, the participants in the first World Congress against the Death Penalty (organized by the French organization Ensemble contre la peine de mort in Strasbourg ) adopted a “Strasbourg Declaration” against the death penalty. It also decided to found a worldwide organization to coordinate the work of the many organizations against the death penalty and to proclaim a day of remembrance against the death penalty. On May 13, 2002, the world coalition was finally founded in Rome . The first "World Day against the Death Penalty" was proclaimed on October 10, 2003. Since 2007 this day has been adopted by the European Union and the Council of Europe as “European Day against the Death Penalty”.
