Life

Manning was a son of Emmett and Amy Manning and grew up in Brooklyn. He attended high school there and graduated. Because he could not yet study, he entered the US Marine Corps and fought in the Korean War . On his return to the United States, he enrolled in 1956 at Saint Francis University's seminary in Loretto , Pennsylvania . In 1963 he graduated in philosophy, Latin and theology and was ordained a Franciscan priest. He worked as a theological teacher at the University of Steubenville in Ohio and as the spiritual director of the Saint Francis seminary.

In the late 1960s, Manning joined the Order of the Little Brothers of Jesus of Charles de Foucauld at. This included an obligation to lead a contemplative life among the poor outside the monastery walls. He worked as a water carrier, bricklayer and dishwasher in France and was a hermit in Spain. In 1970 he returned to the USA and founded a community with four priests in Bayou La Batre , Alabama . They supported shrimp fishermen and their families. He then moved to Fort Lauderdale , Florida , where he worked at Broward Community College . There he began to write seriously, and his alcohol addiction also became an issue. His books “ Ragamuffin Gospel ” (precisely translated: Scarecrow Gospel , German title: Bigger Than Your Heart ) and “ Abbas Child ” ( Child in His Arms ) became bestsellers.

Manning resigned from the Order and married. He later divorced and remained addicted to alcohol, which he disclosed and even wrote about. He also wrote about his deep fears and feelings of abandonment and loneliness, and he gave courage to unvarnished honesty before God and man. Because of his high level of authenticity, he was a sought-after speaker and influenced many people in the USA and through his books in Europe and worldwide. He spent his last years in New Orleans, where he died in 2013.
