Bayou La Batre is a city in Mobile County in the US state of Alabama . The total area of ​​Bayou La Batre is 1.8 km², of which 0.4 km² is water.

geography

Bayou La Batre is located in southwest Alabama in the southern United States and about 6 miles east of the Mississippi border . The place is located directly on the Gulf of Mexico and 8 kilometers east of the 130 square kilometer Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge .

Nearby locations include Coden (1 km south), Grand Bay (3 km northwest), Irvington (6 km north), Theodore (13 km northeast) and Bellefontaine (14 km northeast). The next larger city, with 195,000 inhabitants, is Mobile, about 20 kilometers to the northeast .

history

Bayou La Batre was founded in 1786 during the French colonization of the Gulf Coast, when Joseph Bouzage came to the area and acquired approximately 5 km² (1,259 acres ) of land from the Spanish . It was the first permanent settlement in southern Mobile County. The original name of the town was Riviere d'Erbane , later it was called Riviere la Batterie , before finally taking its current name.

In 1811 the city became part of the Mississippi Territory . After the Civil War in 1865, the city became a popular destination due to its location by the sea. In 1906 a hurricane destroyed large parts of the city and the tourist center. The economy only recovered in the 1920s and from then on concentrated on seafood production and shipbuilding , which are still among the most important economic sectors today.

On August 29, 2005, Bayou La Batre was devastated by Hurricane Katrina .

Alabama State Route 188 runs from the south-east to the north of the city, which joins Alabama State Route 193 a few kilometers east and US Highway 90 a few kilometers northwest , which is partly on the same route as Alabama State Route 16 . At the 2000 census , Bayou La Batre had 2,313 residents, spread across 769 households and 599 families. The population density was thus 221.6 inhabitants / km². 52.44% of the population were white, 33.29% Asian, 10.25% African American. Children under the age of 18 lived in 37.7% of households. The median income was $ 24,539 per household, with 28.2% of the population living below the poverty line .

In the film Forrest Gump , Bayou La Batre is the hometown of Benjamin Buford Blue, who provided the idea for the “ Bubba Gump Shrimp Company ”.
