Loretto is a borough in Cambria County in the US state of Pennsylvania . According to the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,190 in an area of 2.6 km². The population density is 458 per km².
The place was founded by the Catholic priest Demetrius Augustinus Gallitzin and got its name in 1799 after the Italian pilgrimage site Loreto . Loretto has had borough status since 1845 . Nearby is the Federal Correctional Institution, Loretto (FCI Loretto), a medium-security US federal prison.
