The settlement is in the Allegheny Mountains directly on the Eastern Continental Divide . At 701 m, Tunnelhill is one of the highest places in Pennsylvania. Three railway tunnels on the Pittsburgh Line run by Norfolk Southern directly under the village .

The western part of Tunnelhill is in Cambria County , while the eastern half is in Blair County . The small town of Gallitzin is to the west . Together, the two villages have a connection to US Highway 22 , which passes south of the city .

history

The first European settlers came to the Tunnelhill area around 1840. Big changes took place from 1850, when two railway companies started to build tunnels under today's town. The name Tunnelhill established itself after the opening of the post office in 1856. After the completion of the ultimately successful Pennsylvania Railroad , the place developed primarily through coal mining and coke production . On December 5, 1876, Tunnelhill was spun off from Gallitzin Township and became an independent borough. In 1890 the place reached its highest population with 730 inhabitants. Especially after the Second World War, the dwindling coal industry also led to a decline in the resident population. In April 1968 a part of the adjacent Allegheny Township was incorporated, which meant that the population remained stable for the time being.
