Oliver Colbentson

Oliver Edward Colbentson (born November 14, 1927 in Chicago , † January 25, 2013 ) was an American violinist and music teacher.

Colbentson had violin lessons from his father from the age of five. From 1941 he studied at the Chicago Musical College with Leon Sametini . In 1943, when he won a competition, he performed as a soloist with the orchestra of the Orchestra Hall in Chicago. In the same year he began studying at the University of Chicago . After three years of service in the US Air Force orchestra , he completed his training in New York with Diran Alexanian .

From 1954 to 1958 Colbentsen was concertmaster in the orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera , and he also made annual concert tours to Europe, which took him to Scandinavia, Holland, Austria, Germany, England, France, Italy and Switzerland. In 1958 he moved to Nuremberg. There he became concertmaster of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and lecturer and head of the string department at the Meistersinger Conservatory (Nuremberg University of Music). During his career, Colbentson has appeared in more than 1,500 concerts and radio productions and recorded 19 LPs. Colbentson's regular chamber music partner was the pianist Erich Appel .
