David Garrick, 1967

David Garrick (* 12. September 1945 in Liverpool , England as Philip Darrell Core ; † 23. August 2013 in Wirral , England) was a British opera - and pop singer .

Life & Career

Garrick was discovered in the church choir of his ward. Immediately after leaving school, Garrick attended a conservatory to train as an opera singer. During this study and afterwards he occupied himself with the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ; But Garrick was also very interested in the life and work of Mario Lanza .

His career as a pop singer came about as the result of a bet between Garrick and some friends at the Cavern Club in London . His first success as a pop singer was a cover version of Lady Jane  - written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger - which hit number 28 in the UK charts. His biggest hit in late 1966 / early 1967 was Dear Mrs. Applebee . With this song Garrick reached number 1 in the German charts and number 22 in Great Britain. The very similar-sounding follow-up single Please Mr. Moving Man (May 1967) and Don't Go Out into the Rain (December 1967) - written by Kenny Young ( Fox ) and previously recorded by Herman's Hermits - were two smaller hits in Germany. His album A Boy Called David made it to number 25 in the German LP charts in the spring of 1967. It was precisely because of this success in Germany that Garrick subsequently also recorded some titles in German, but was unable to build on his previous successes.

He took his stage name from the most important British actor of the 18th century, David Garrick .
