Peter Löscher (2011)

Peter Löscher (born September 17, 1957 in Villach , Austria ) is an Austrian manager . From 2007 to 2013 he was CEO of Siemens AG . He has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sulzer AG since 2014 .

Life

Löscher grew up in Villach, where his father ran a sawmill. Because of a serious illness he missed the first three years of elementary school. His mother taught him to read and write at home. Löscher passed the Matura at the Peraugymnasium in Villach in 1978. He then studied business administration at the Vienna University of Economics and Business . He completed his studies in 1984 with a diploma thesis on the thesis of provider-induced demand in the outpatient medical sector: a system-theoretical consideration . From 1985 to 1986 he received a scholarship from the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce and studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong , where he obtained an MBA . He also took part in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School .

From 1987, Löscher worked for the Hoechst pharmaceutical company for twelve years , including in Spain, Japan, Great Britain and the USA. After Hoechst's merger with Rhône-Poulenc to form Aventis, he remained there until 2002. The pharmaceutical company Amersham was his next stop. This was taken over by General Electric a year later , and Löscher moved to the General Electric board of directors. In 2006 he moved to the board of directors of the US pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. On May 20, 2007, Siemens announced that Peter Löscher would become Siemens CEO on July 1. During Löscher's tenure, there was a major restructuring of the company and the sale of large subsidiaries and holdings such as Siemens IT Solutions and Services and Fujitsu Siemens Computers .

After two profit warnings within less than three months, the Siemens Group announced on July 27, 2013 that Löscher was leaving the company as CEO. The final decision was made on July 31, 2013 by the Supervisory Board. One of the reasons is the failure of the Löschers concept to position Siemens primarily on the topic of green infrastructure and the energy transition. Since his contract would have run until March 2017, he received a gross severance payment of 14.8 million euros and a special contribution of 2.24 million euros to the company pension scheme. After leaving the Siemens executive board, Löscher retained the chairmanship of the board of trustees of the Siemens Foundation until 2014.

In 2014 Löscher was appointed to the board of directors of the Swiss Renova Management AG . The financial holding of the Russian oligarch Viktor Felixowitsch Wekselberg restructured itself completely. In addition to Löscher, Josef Ackermann , previously Deutsche Bank , also became a member of the Board of Directors, which Wekselberg presides over. Löscher also became CEO of Renova Management AG. At Sulzer AG , in which Renova holds 30.2%, Löscher also became Chairman of the Board of Directors. In April 2016, Löscher resigned as CEO of Renova AG. In May 2019 he was succeeded by Wolfgang Berndt as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of OMV . Peter Löscher is a member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Telefónica SA and has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Telefónica Deutschland Holding AG since April 1, 2020.

Peter Löscher is married to a Spaniard and has four children with her. For example, he is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Japanese.
