Karl Julius Lohr (also Karl-Julius, called Jule) (born November 16, 1850 ; † June 28, 1921 ) was a German small animal breeder, co-founder and long-time chairman of the first German rabbit breeders' association in Chemnitz , as well as one of the first judges for breed rabbits in Germany .

Life

Karl Julius Lohr was born in Kappel on November 16, 1852 as the son of a family of craftsmen . Lohr came into contact with small animal and bird breeding in the home. From 1863/64 to 1867 Lohr learned the carpentry trade and after the journeyman's examination went on a journey in the Dresden area . Enlisted in the military in 1869, Julius Lohr took part in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/1871 and, like many other soldiers, got to know the more modern rabbit breeding, which was largely unknown in Germany at the time. After returning to Germany, Lohr was in Görlitz in 1877/1878 , where Robert Oettel had founded the "Hühnerologische Verein" to promote pedigree poultry breeding in 1852 in order to gain experience and advice on founding a small animal breeding association . Together with Julius Berger, Gustav Felber, Ernst Fischer, Heinrich Junge, Herrmann Rost, Julius Sonntag and Paul Starke , Lohr founded the “General Rabbit Breeder Association Chemnitz” on April 12, 1880 in the restaurant “Bienenstock” in Chemnitz, making it the first such association in Germany has been. Julius Lohr was elected chairman, an office he held until 1900, after which he was appointed honorary chairman for life. In 1885 Lohr developed a rating system based on 100 points for the first rabbit show with evaluation of the animals for the breeds Angora , Belgian giants , French rams , silver and Russian rabbits . This rating system can thus be regarded as the first standard used in Germany for pedigree rabbits. The 100-point system introduced by Lohr still forms the basis of the rabbit evaluation today. On March 27, 1892, the "Association of German Rabbit Breeders" was founded in Leipzig, Julius Lohr was elected to the board and was temporarily its chairman. In 1893 Lohr was confirmed as one of three federal judges.
