Union Internationale de Spéléologie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Union Internationale de Spéléologie ( German International Union for Speleology ) is a non-governmental organization founded in 1965 , the aim of which is to promote cooperation between both academic and technical speleologists. It is considered the undisputed international umbrella organization of all karst and cave researchers.

history

After speleology was recognized more and more as an interdisciplinary natural science at the beginning of the 20th century , the need for researchers to exchange ideas grew. From 1953, there were regular international specialist congresses, including 1965 in Postojna . At this, an initiative of several speleologists proposed to found an international association that would bring together scientists from all over the world and coordinate their activities. On September 16, 1965, during the closing ceremony of the conference, the UIS, based in Postojna, was founded. The delegates to the Congress thus became the founding members of the Union. The organization and its statutes were confirmed by the subsequent congress in Stuttgart in 1969.

The International Journal of Speleology has been an official scientific journal since 1978, and its articles are peer-reviewed before publication . The journal, which had been published by researchers in the Netherlands as early as 1964, has gone through several restructurings in the past few decades. Until 2010 the Italian Speleological Society acted as owner and publisher.

structure

In the narrower sense, the association consists of a president, two vice-presidents, a general secretary and eight assistant secretaries. Each person must be from a different country. These officials are elected by the General Assembly during the four-year International Speleological Congress.

The voting members of the General Assembly are sent by national cave associations . The work of the UIS takes place primarily in various commissions and working groups.

Outside of the regular statutes, there is the possibility of an honorary presidency . So far there have been four honorary presidents: Bernard Gèze (1977–1997 [† 1996]), Hubert Trimmel (1993- [† 2013]), Paolo Forti (since 1997) and Andrew Eavis (since 2013).

In the German-speaking area, the Association of German Speleologists and Karst Researchers , the Association of Austrian Speleologists and the Swiss Society for Speleological Research are members of the UIS. They represent all researchers in Germany and Austria, as the UIS only allows one delegate per country. If there are several member organizations in a country, they must agree on a delegate.
