Association of Austrian Speleologists

The Association of Austrian Speleologists (VÖH) is the umbrella organization of the speleological organizations in Austria. The association, which has existed since 1949, currently comprises 25 speleological associations with a total of almost 2,700 members and 28 show caves (as of 2017). The seat of the association is in Vienna .

The association coordinates the activities of its member associations and carries out karst and cave research projects itself. Together with the Association of German Cave and Karst Researchers, he publishes the peer-reviewed journal Die Höhle - a magazine for karst and cave studies and has its own book series with the supplements to the magazine Die Höhle . In addition, association news , karst distribution and karst hazard maps and the Speldok series are published. The association maintains a library and conducts training and information events. In cooperation with the Karst and Speleological Working Group at the Natural History Museum Vienna , the association maintains the Austrian cave directory .

The association is u. a. Member of the Union Internationale de Spéléologie , the Association of Austrian Scientific Societies and the umbrella organization for the environment . As an alpine association , the association also looks after shelters, maintains hiking trails and is a member of the Austrian Mountaineering Association , whereby it participates in the Austrian reciprocity . In terms of cave protection, attention is drawn to the great importance of karst areas as sensitive natural areas, especially with regard to the water supply from karst areas in the Alpine region.

The VÖH refuge huts are the Emmahütte and the Gasselhütte .
