Erzhalden is a village in the Ybbstal Alps , and belongs to the municipality of Landl in the Liezen district , Styria .

geography

Erzhalden is located at the confluence of the Mendlingbach (Lassingbach) in the Salza (Enns) , a tributary of the Enns. The Salza is here deep between the Hochkarmassiv ( Göstling Alps of Lassingalpen ) and the eastern Hochschwab group ( wall group Cold Stangl- / ) dug in the south, Mendlingbach between Hochkar and Gamssteinmassiv ( Ybbstaler foothills ) in the north. The place is about a kilometer upstream from where the narrow valley at Palfau (An der Wacht) begins.

The valley is largely uninhabited here, upstream of the Salza, towards the Wildalpen , which is 13 km away, there are only a few houses called Schönau (and half-timbered in front of the Wildalpen ), Mendlingbach-upward follow houses from Raffelgraben after a good half kilometer , and another Kilometers of Mendling and the state border with Lower Austria. Erzhalden itself is just a single inn.

In Erzhalden, Hochschwab Straße B 24, coming from Gußwerk near Mariazell , joins Erlauftal Straße B 25, which is an important long-distance connection from Ybbs an der Donau (via Wieselburg and Scheibbs ) near Landl - Lainbach im Ennstal to B115 Eisenstraße .

history

Today's B 25 was an important branch of the Eisenstraße , through which the three important small iron towns Gresten , Scheibbs and Purgstall an der Erlauf (or Scheibbs, Purgstall, Göstling ) were supplied with pig iron, and which was therefore called Dreimärktestraße . The route was maintained by the local trades , the hammer lords . The customs and toll station on the Styrian - Austrian border was in Mendling (the iron toll house in Mendling is now a listed building). In order to save the toll for the turnoff in front of the Mendling Pass over the Promau to Hollenstein an der Ybbs , a smuggler's route (Schwärzerweg) into the Hollensteiner Sandgraben was created from Erzhalden over the Scheibenberg . In 1811, the maintenance of the roads was entrusted to the Innerberger Main Union , which relocated the toll to Palfau, with the result that the Erzhalden smuggling became less important. Remnants of the Schwärzerweg are still preserved and have been marked as the Raffelgraben-Schwärzerweg theme trail since 1998 .

The valley area around Erzhalden lies entirely in the Wildalpener Salzatal nature reserve and in the Eisenwurzen nature park .

The Salza itself is one of the most important white water sports rivers in Central Europe, and Erzhalden is both a release point for the more moderate sections of the course from Wildalpen, as well as the white water stretch of the lower Salza, which has dug like a canyon into the Palfauer valley up to the mouth at Reichraming .
