The Wildalpener Salzatal (NSG a02) in the Styrian Limestone Alps was declared a nature reserve by ordinance in 1958 and with 51,460 hectares is one of the largest nature reserves in Austria. It stretches over about 20 km on both sides of the Salza wild water river from near Altenmarkt near Sankt Gallen in the west to Gußwerk near Mariazell in the east, and includes the entire municipality of Wildalpen , the areas of the former municipalities of Palfau and Gams near Hieflau , as well as the northeast part of Altenmarkt and the western half of Gusswerk.

The nature reserve extends into the Hochschwab group in the south and the Ybbstal Alps in the north, at heights of 490 to 2277  m . These include the northern flanks of the Hochschwab , the Zeller Staritzen and other neighboring mountains as well as the southern flanks of the Voralpe and Gamsstein in the Ybbstaler Voralpen and Göstlinger Alps and the southern flanks of the Zellerhüte in the Lassingalpen .

With the exception of the Gußwerker shares, the nature reserve also belongs to the Styrian Eisenwurzen nature park, which merges into the Gesäuse National Park  ( NP 2002 or the Gesäuse nature reserve and the Ennstal valley to the state border ). North close in Lower Austria nor the conservation area Oetscher-Dürrenstein ( LSG 11 ), whose core region the wilderness area Dürrenstein ( wilderness area IUCN Ib) and the northern part of the natural park Oetscher-Tormäuer  ( NE. NPK 8 forms) and in the foothills moieties of the natural park [ Lower Austrian ] Eisenwurzen  ( NPK 20 ). The area thus represents an important biosphere corridor of a protected area network, which today extends almost completely from the borders of Vienna to the Dachstein ( Econnect project ).

The main town is the centrally located Wildalpen with a kayak performance center run by the Friends of Nature organization .
