The Vorderen Tormäuer are a rock formation, and the valley section (also known as Toreckklamm ) is the Erlauf in the Ötscher area in the Ybbstal Alps of Lower Austria . They form the core of the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park .

Location and landscape

Erlauf bei Toter Mann (continuation of the gate wall upstream, the same visible in the background; the mountain is the Turmkogel)

The upper course of the Erlauf is a narrow breakthrough valley and is called Tormäuer along its length between the Mariazell area and near Kienberg (municipality of Gaming) . The lowest section is the front gate walls. In particular, this is the name given to the 200 to 400 meter high rocky eruptions, orographically right south eruptions of the Turmkogel ( 1130  m above sea level ), which stretch from the Trefflingfall with its northeasternmost pillar, the Toreck , to the Dornreithgraben below the Falkenstein ( Falkensteinhöhe , approx. 830  m above sea level ). Above the walls there is a valley shoulder on which the farms Ober- and Untereiben ( 578  m and approx.  660  m above sea level ) and Unterfalkenstein (approx.  590  m above sea level ) of the village of Anger (municipality of St. Anton ad Jeßnitz) . In a broader sense, the section between Trübenbach and the Eibenboden ( Teufelskirche - Toter Mann - Trefflingbach) is one of the front gate walls .

natural reserve

Trefflingfall , at the east end of the formation

The gate walls belong to the important natural areas as well as geotopes of the Eisenwurzen – Ötscher region. It is a largely natural free-flowing stretch. As in other valleys, there were power plant plans here in the post-war period, but in 1966 these were put aside after a signature campaign. In 1970 , the European year of nature conservation , the area was placed under protection as a nature park.

geology

The valley landscape is a cut of the Erlauf in a mighty slab of Gutensteiner Kalk , Muschelkalkmassen with superimposed Lunzer layers , which are here called Reisalpendecke or Annaberg partial ceiling .

In the Vorderen Tormäuern there are a number of noteworthy caves, such as the Eibenmühlenhöhle ( cadastral number 1836/182), the Urmannshöhle in Urmannsau near Kienberg (1836/32) and the 153 meter long Schreinerödhöhle in Falkenstein (1836/64), and numerous holes. The opposite slope is also rich in caves , especially the Ötscher stalactite cave in Steinbühel ( Roßkogelgraben , 1824/10), where numerous other small caves can be found.

Sport and hiking

The valley is a well-known white water sports area , and known among ice climbers .
The valley trail is a delightful hike and a variant of the Austrian long-distance hiking trail 04 Pre-Alpine Trail  . The areas above the walls are also easy hiking areas, in particular the north-south long-distance hiking trail , which is marked with a variant on the wall edge - marked 05.277.
