history
Altenmarkt was first mentioned in a document in 1106 with the mention of the district of Frenz ("Frodniz") and in 1139 with the mention of the district of Eßling ("Ozlich"). Altenmarkt as "Antiquum forum" is first documented in 1335. The first church, which was a branch of the mother parish of St. Gallen, consecrated in 1152, is likely to have been built as early as the middle of the 12th century.
From the 16th century iron production and processing flourished in Altenmarkt. Altenmarkt was destroyed by fire in 1575 and 1793. In 1786, as part of the Josephine church reform, Altenmarkt was raised to the status of an independent parish. In the period from 1800 to 1809, French troops repeatedly invaded Altenmarkt and looted the place.
In the 19th and 20th centuries Altenmarkt experienced a boom as a tourist community for hikers and mountaineers.
The time after the Second World War and the occupation by Russian and British troops brought a flourishing of the place with infrastructural measures, the construction of an Enns power station and the emergence of industrial plants.
